Know which card will be charged

Set up Walmart Pay before you reach the register

Walmart Pay connects a store checkout to the payment methods in your Walmart account. The useful preparation happens before the line: check the saved cards, gift-card preference and sign-in while you have time to fix them.

THE USEFUL PART FIRST

Open Walmart Pay in the official Walmart app, select a supported saved payment method and scan the register's QR code during checkout. Confirm the payment finishes and the eReceipt appears. Walmart Pay does not require a Walmart+ membership and is different from scanning products as you shop.

Set the payment preference deliberately

Walmart Pay supports saved debit, credit and Walmart gift cards. Walmart says it uses an available gift-card balance first unless you turn that preference off. This matters if you are saving a gift for another purchase or need today's charge on a particular card.

Open the app before shopping and check the selected payment method. A replaced or expired card is easier to fix away from a busy checkout. Make sure you can sign in and authorize payment without relying on another person's phone.

  • Check the saved card's last four digits.
  • Decide whether to spend your gift-card balance.
  • Keep enough battery and connectivity to finish checkout.
  • Use your account's security controls; do not share verification codes.

Scanning the basket and paying are separate steps

With ordinary Walmart Pay, your items are scanned at checkout. Then open the payment feature and scan the QR code displayed on the register. Review the selected method and finish the prompts. Wait for confirmation rather than assuming that pointing the camera completed a payment.

Walmart's instructions say to apply EBT benefits such as SNAP or WIC before using Walmart Pay for the remaining amount. Ask the associate for help if the transaction needs several payment methods. The app does not make an otherwise ineligible item eligible for benefits.

Find the receipt before starting over

Walmart Pay produces an electronic receipt. Check the app or Purchase History after payment, particularly if the screen briefly loses connection. If the outcome is unclear, ask the cashier to check the transaction before attempting to pay again.

Tap to Pay and Walmart+ scan & go are separate checkout features. A phone that supports a digital wallet still needs the appropriate payment flow. Likewise, scanning a product to check its price does not place it on a paid receipt. Use the feature name shown on your screen to explain a problem to an associate.

Questions that come up

Do I need Walmart+ for Walmart Pay?

No. Walmart Pay uses a Walmart account; the paid membership feature for scanning products as you shop is mobile scan & go.

Is Walmart Pay the same as Apple Pay?

No. Walmart Pay uses the Walmart app and a register QR code. Apple Pay uses a supported digital-wallet payment flow at enabled terminals.
