Finish the transaction, not just the scanning

Walmart self-checkout: what changes when you use scan & go?

Three features are easily confused: scanning at a self-checkout register, paying with Walmart Pay, and scanning products while you shop with Walmart+ scan & go. They can meet at the same register, but they are not the same process.

THE USEFUL PART FIRST

At ordinary self-checkout, scan and pay at the register. Walmart+ scan & go lets members build a digital cart in the app, then follow the store's checkout instructions, normally by scanning a self-checkout QR code. Complete any required weighing, verification or item check before finishing payment.

Use the flow that matches your shopping

For ordinary self-checkout, use an available lane and follow its posted instructions. Walmart Pay can handle the payment part after your items have been scanned. Merely opening the Walmart app or scanning a price does not create a completed sale.

With mobile scan & go, open the feature inside the store, scan each product as it enters the cart and review quantities before checkout. Follow the app's current labels; Walmart's help page describes a Review & Pay step followed by scanning the register's QR code.

Expect a few items to need another step

Weighted produce can show an estimated amount in the digital cart and need weighing or a final count at checkout. Age-restricted products may require an associate. If a barcode will not scan, get help so the item is properly recorded rather than choosing a similar product.

Walmart's scan & go terms allow item checks and, in some locations or circumstances, a digital-cart transfer to a self-checkout or staffed register. The app is therefore not a promise that every trip ends by walking straight out. Follow the instructions actually offered in that store.

Resolve discrepancies while the transaction is open

Review duplicate scans, quantities and any item you decided not to buy. If the total looks wrong, ask the associate to check it before payment. Keep the cart and scanned items together while a correction is made.

After paying, confirm that a receipt is available. If the phone or register stalls, ask whether the transaction completed before trying again. Lane availability and local operating arrangements can change; this guide does not claim that every Walmart has identical self-checkout hours or access rules.

Questions that come up

Can I skip the register after scanning every item?

Follow the checkout flow Walmart gives you. Its published instructions include pairing with a register and completing any required checks and payment.

Does scan & go guarantee no item check?

No. Walmart's terms explicitly allow checks of products and the receipt.
