Walmart’s online payment help lists credit and debit cards, PayPal, pay by bank, Walmart gift cards and Balance, plus eligible EBT, HSA/FSA and benefit cards. In-store Tap to Pay is rolling out during 2026. A method accepted online is not automatically a payment option in every store or specialty checkout.

Pick the checkout before the payment plan
Build the cart using the fulfillment method you intend to use. A delivered grocery basket, a shipped Marketplace item and an in-store purchase are different checkout situations. Review the payment screen after choosing the address or store so that you are evaluating the order you will actually place.
If you want to use a specific balance or benefit, inspect how much of the basket it covers before submitting. Do not assume an eligible card pays every charge attached to an order. Keep another accepted method available for any amount that the checkout leaves unpaid, and review the total before confirming it.

Gift cards and benefit cards are not interchangeable
A Walmart gift card is a stored balance for permitted purchases. A benefits card follows its own program's spending rules. A discount, a benefit payment and Walmart Cash also do different jobs: one changes a price, another funds eligible spending, and another is a reward balance. Naming the right one makes checkout problems easier to diagnose.
Walmart's payment guidance says gift cards cannot buy other gift cards. For EBT, HSA, FSA or other benefit payments, check the official eligibility shown for the item and the program rather than relying on the department name. An item being sold in a health aisle does not by itself answer the payment question.
Can you change the payment method after ordering?
Walmart’s payment help permits an update when the order is in placed or prepared status, and says the method can be changed only once per order. In Purchase History, select the order and look for Edit under Payment Method. Orders already on the way or delivered cannot use that change.
Changing a saved card in Wallet and changing payment on an existing order are different actions. If your card number changed, the current instructions say to remove the old saved card and add the new one; an expiration-date edit does not replace an entirely different number. Reopen the order after saving to make sure the intended payment is attached to that purchase.
Read the allocation on a mixed basket
Imagine a checkout with $42 in eligible groceries, $12 in household supplies and a separate delivery charge. The fact that your EBT or other benefits card is accepted does not establish that it covers all three lines. Review the eligible subtotal and the amount assigned to the backup method before submitting. This is an example of how to read a cart, not a determination of eligibility for a particular item.
A gift card balance can also be smaller than the final total once tax or fees are added. Decide which accepted method pays the remainder before you confirm. If the app offers a saved balance automatically, inspect that selection rather than relying on the card you normally use. The receipt should then provide the payment record for any later return.
Use the error to decide the next action
If the error names billing verification, compare the name, ZIP code and address with the issuer’s record. If it names insufficient funds, check available funds after pending holds, not just the last statement balance. If a payment choice is absent, first check whether the fulfillment method, item or checkout supports it; entering the same credentials again will not add an unsupported option.
After a failed attempt, look for a confirmed order before starting a new checkout. A pending bank authorization and a completed order are separate evidence. Ask Walmart about whether an order exists, and the issuer about the authorization. Keep the exact error wording and time of the attempt, but leave full account numbers and security codes out of screenshots you share.
