THE USEFUL PART FIRST
Wait for Walmart's ready-for-pickup notice. Use the app or message link to check in, then park in a designated pickup space and submit your spot and vehicle details. If app check-in fails, call the number on the pickup sign or your confirmation email.
| Stage | Action | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| Ordering | Choose the exact store and an available slot | The hours of the main sales floor |
| Before traveling | Wait for Ready for Pickup | An estimated time in an earlier cart |
| On the way | Use the app, email or text check-in link | Arrival at the store |
| In a designated bay | Select I’ve parked and enter spot/vehicle details | Parking elsewhere on the property |
| App unavailable | Call the number on the pickup sign or confirmation | Calling a different store |
| Order under minimum | Inspect the below-minimum fee before paying | A Walmart+ requirement to use pickup |
Confirm the store as carefully as the time
Check the street address before submitting the basket. Two nearby Walmart locations can have different availability, and a familiar city name does not guarantee you selected your usual store. Save the address with the pickup window so that the person collecting the order has both.
Review which items are assigned to pickup. A product added to the cart may instead be listed for shipping, and it will not necessarily be waiting with the groceries. If someone else will collect the order, use Walmart's available pickup-person controls and give them the relevant confirmation rather than your account password.
Give the shopper a usable plan
Decide where an alternative is acceptable. A larger pack might be fine when storage is available; a different ingredient or an unwanted fragrance might not be. Set item-level preferences before the order's edit cutoff and watch for any substitution message.
At pickup, tell the associate if you do not want a substitution. Walmart's guidance says the associate can remove an unwanted replacement from the order. Review the resulting receipt afterward instead of assuming the original estimated total stayed the same.
| Before collection | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Check the store address | Avoid arriving at the wrong pickup area |
| Review substitutions | Prevent unwanted replacements from going home |
| Clear room in the vehicle | Make the handoff easier |
| Keep the confirmation accessible | Have the order reference ready if check-in fails |
Check in twice: on the way, then parked
Use the ready message or app to say you are on the way. Once parked, complete the arrival step and enter the correct spot and vehicle color. Do not mark yourself parked while you are still driving or in a different part of the lot; the associate needs a useful location.
If the app will not cooperate, use the phone number posted at the pickup area. Explain that you have a ready order and provide the reference and spot. A general customer-service call may be less useful than reaching the team handling that store's pickup.
Handle a delay without starting over
If the order is not ready, check the latest status before setting off. If you have arrived and completed check-in, contact the pickup team using the posted number. Describe which step you reached; “I have a ready notification and am in spot four” gives more information than “my order is late.”
If you cannot make the window, open purchase history promptly to see the available changes and contact the store. Published help pages describe different late-pickup cutoffs, so we do not promise one national grace period. Confirm the arrangement for your order instead of assuming it can stay there overnight.
Pickup can be free without Walmart+
Walmart’s published fee guide offers free pickup on qualifying orders over $35 and applies a below-minimum fee below that threshold. You do not need the membership simply to collect an order. Check the basket’s fulfillment groups and final fee line before paying; a shipping item in the same cart does not automatically mean it will be included in the curbside handoff.
If you are just short of the displayed minimum, compare the fee with the cost of something you already need. Adding an unwanted product to avoid a fee is not automatically a saving. For example, adding $8 of goods to avoid a smaller fee increases today’s spending unless those goods replace a planned purchase.
A time slot is a schedule, not a ready notification
Suppose your pickup window begins at 5 p.m. and the app still says the order is being prepared at 4:45. The useful next event is the Ready for Pickup message. Arriving before that message does not make the order complete, and the team may still be shopping or resolving substitutions.
Review replacements while the associate can still act
For collection by a friend or family member, update the authorized pickup person through the order controls and send them the store address, ready status and relevant substitutions. They should not need your Walmart password. Make one person responsible for communicating a change so two collectors do not independently head for the same order.
Questions that come up
Can I collect an order before the ready notification?
Do not plan on it. Wait for confirmation that the order is ready before traveling.
Is Walmart+ required for pickup?
Walmart offers pickup without requiring Walmart+. Any applicable order-minimum fee should appear at checkout.
