Make room for the chairs, too

Walmart patio furniture: will the set fit your space?

A patio set can fit the photograph and still block your back door. Before choosing a finish or cushion color, work out where people will sit, pull their chairs out and walk through. That drawing is a better starting point than a set's piece count.

THE USEFUL PART FIRST

Compare the dimensions of every chair and table, then check the space needed to use them. Count actual seats, confirm which cushions and accessories are included, and read the exact material's care instructions before ordering.

Draw the patio as you actually use it

Measure the usable area, marking doors, steps, grills and the route into the house. Tape out a proposed table and chairs on the floor. Then pull an existing chair back as if someone were getting up. A clear rectangle on a listing is not the same as a comfortable dining area.

For a sectional, check its orientation and the dimensions of each section. A reversible-looking photo does not establish that the corner can be assembled on either side. For a balcony, include the delivery route and any building restrictions in your plan.

Translate “five pieces” into a usable seating plan

Walmart's patio-set listings cover dining, bistro and conversation arrangements. Compare the included-parts list, not just the headline number: a table is a piece but is not a seat. An ottoman may have a stated seating limit or may be intended only as a footrest.

Check whether the displayed umbrella, cushions and decorative pillows are included. Record the dimensions of replaceable cushions; an unusual shape can make future replacements harder to match. If the table has an umbrella hole, confirm the umbrella and base requirements separately.

Choose a material you can maintain

Read care instructions for both the frame and the cushions. POLYWOOD, for example, publishes guidance for its own furniture; that is not permission to use the same cleaner or cleaning method on painted steel, wood or another brand's fabric.

Ask where cushions will go during bad weather and how the furniture will be stored when unused. Terms such as weather-resistant do not establish a maintenance-free lifespan. A removable cover is only machine-washable if its care label says so.

Make a delivery and assembly plan

Check the seller, delivery service and number of cartons shown for the offer. Compare packed dimensions with doorways and stair turns. Assembly shown in a product photo is not evidence that assembly is included.

When it arrives, match the cartons, parts and hardware to the instructions before starting. Keep the packaging until you have checked the set and understand the return route. Photograph damage before covering it with cushions or attempting a repair.

  • Save the model name, selected color and included-parts list.
  • Check each seat's stated capacity in the manufacturer specifications.
  • Include covers, storage and any assembly service in the total budget.

Questions that come up

Does a larger piece count mean more seats?

No. Tables, ottomans and sectional components may count as pieces. Use the seating plan and included-parts list.

Can I leave any patio set outside all year?

Do not assume so. Follow the manufacturer instructions for the frame and fabric, including any seasonal storage requirements.
