Measure the space you can actually furnish

Draw the patio from above and write its dimensions on the edges. Mark the door swing, steps, fixed planters, drains and anything that has to remain accessible. If there is a grill or heater, carry over the clearances in that appliance’s own instructions. Furniture placement should not consume those spaces just because they look empty in your drawing.

Next, choose the route people will use to reach the house, yard or stairs. Set out empty boxes or tape to represent furniture at full size. Walk the route carrying a tray and open the door fully. For a household member who uses a mobility aid, test the actual turning and access space they need rather than relying on a generic furniture arrangement.

Measure height as well as floor area where it matters. A balcony railing, low window ledge or door handle can interfere with chair backs. A table that fits the floor may still stop you using a window or pulling a screen door shut.

Work through an 8-foot-wide patio example

Suppose the usable patio is 96 inches wide and your proposed dining table is 36 inches wide. That leaves 60 inches across both sides. If you allocate it evenly, you have 30 inches on each side for the chair and movement together. The arithmetic describes the space available; it does not prove the layout is comfortable.

Take the actual chair dimensions from the selected set. Mark where the back of the chair sits when someone is seated, then where it reaches when they stand up. If a through-route runs behind that chair, that route also needs room. You may find that a smaller table, seating on fewer sides or a two-person set suits the space better.

For a sectional, test the shape rather than only its longest dimension. A corner section can leave a narrow entrance to the middle of the seating area. Confirm that a left-facing configuration can be reversed before drawing it the opposite way. Separate pieces offer different arrangements only when their backs, connectors and manufacturer instructions permit them.

Turn the piece count into a seating plan

A hypothetical five-piece dining set with four chairs and one table seats four. A five-piece conversation set containing a sofa, two ottomans and two tables has a different capacity and purpose. Treat the item list as a packing list, then write how many people can sit in the positions you actually intend to use.

An ottoman is not automatically an extra chair. Look for its intended use and stated capacity. For a sofa, compare the usable seat width rather than dividing the overall frame width by an assumed number of people. Arms and thick side cushions take up space; deep lounge seats may suit a different posture from upright dining chairs.

Check the table height against the chairs, especially if you are mixing pieces. Record whether the photograph’s cushions, decorative pillows, umbrella and base are included. An umbrella hole in a table is a compatibility feature, not an included umbrella or proof that any base will fit beneath it.

Choose care requirements you can keep up with

Read separate instructions for the frame, hardware and upholstery. POLYWOOD’s own maintenance guide distinguishes its lumber, cushions, sling fabrics and aluminum products. For example, it advises drying its cushions and storing them in a dry place; its aluminum guidance warns against abrasive tools and harsh cleaners. That is a reason to identify the material, not a universal recipe for every set sold at Walmart.

Ask where wet cushions will dry without blocking the room or doorway. A deck box is useful only if its interior takes the cushions you own and the cushions are ready for storage. Write down replacement cushion width, depth, thickness and attachment style while the product specifications are easy to find.

Removable cushion covers are not necessarily machine-washable. Likewise, weather-resistant does not mean that every finish can remain outside without care for every season. Use the selected product’s instructions for covers, cleaning, winter storage and any hardware checks. Avoid copying a cleaning method from a visually similar material.

Compare the cost of a usable setup

Use a simple project total: furniture plus necessary cover, cushion storage, umbrella and base if wanted, delivery, assembly and tax. Keep optional decoration separate. This lets you compare two sets that arrive with different contents without assuming the lowest headline price is the least expensive finished setup.

For illustration, a $220 set, $45 cover and $35 storage solution total $300 before tax or delivery. A $270 set with suitable cushions and no extra storage purchase could cost less for your situation. These figures demonstrate the calculation; they are not advertised Walmart prices or a claim that one material lasts longer.

Budget attention as well as money. Count how many boxes arrive, where you can lay out the components, and whether you have the tools and help the assembly instructions call for. If assembly is offered separately, read what that service includes before counting it as part of the furniture price.

Make the route from the delivery point to the patio work

Compare carton dimensions with gates, stairs, elevators and tight corners. The assembled footprint and packed dimensions answer different questions. A large sectional that fits outdoors can still be awkward to move through a small apartment. Check the offered delivery service for the specific seller and order instead of assuming delivery includes placement on the patio.

Before assembly, compare the cartons and parts with the manual. A multi-carton shipment may arrive in stages, so match tracking details to the carton count. Photograph a damaged panel or wrong component while its label is visible, and use the order’s help route to resolve it. Avoid making a damaged part harder to identify by assembling around it.

Keep the model, selected finish, hardware list and instructions together. Once assembled as directed, repeat the occupied-chair and doorway check. That final layout is what you will live with; there is no need to preserve the catalog arrangement if an allowed alternative works better.
