One small photo, important details

Walmart passport photos: prepare for the visit

Before visiting a Photo Center, establish what the application actually needs: a printed U.S. passport photo, a digital renewal image, or a photograph for a different document.

THE USEFUL PART FIRST

Walmart Photo's passport page lists an in-store 2×2-inch photo service at $7.64 when reviewed. It says no appointment is needed; kiosk and associate arrangements depend on the store. Confirm the service and price locally, and follow the issuing authority's requirements for your document.

Start with the document, not the photo counter

Read the photo instructions linked from the application you are completing. A U.S. passport, a foreign visa, and another country's passport do not necessarily use the same dimensions or file requirements. Tell the Photo Center exactly which document you are preparing.

For a U.S. online passport renewal, the State Department directs applicants to upload a digital photo. Do not assume that purchasing a paper print automatically supplies the digital file required by that process. Confirm the available file option with the center before paying.

Check the essential U.S. photo rules

The State Department requires a recent color photograph with a plain white or off-white background and a direct view of the face. For paper applications, the printed size is 2×2 inches. Its current examples explain head position, lighting, glasses, and permitted exceptions.

Use the State Department page for the detailed requirements rather than relying on a retailer's short summary. In particular, do not use filters, retouching, or AI to change the submitted photo. If lighting or the background is wrong, take a new photograph.

  • Check whether the application needs a print or a digital image.
  • Read the authority's current photo instructions.
  • Confirm that the chosen Photo Center provides the required service.
  • Bring the document's requirements if it is not a standard U.S. passport application.
  • Review the finished photograph before leaving.

Confirm the local setup

Walmart describes newer self-service kiosks with built-in cameras and associate assistance where that hardware is not available. A national service page cannot tell you whether a particular camera or kiosk is working today. Call the Photo Center if you are making a special trip.

For a child or infant, explain the age before traveling and ask how that store handles the session. Leave enough time for another attempt if the image is unsuitable. Avoid scheduling the photo visit immediately before an application appointment if there is no margin for a problem.

Inspect the result against the application

Look for clear focus, even lighting, and an unobstructed face. Check the printed dimensions or the digital-file requirements as appropriate. Keep the receipt and any digital original supplied to you.

A retailer's compliance check does not replace the issuing authority's decision. If the application service asks for a replacement image, follow its specific instructions and contact the Photo Center about the next step.

Questions that come up

Can I use a generated or heavily edited portrait?

No for a U.S. passport application. The State Department says not to alter the photo with apps, filters, software, or artificial intelligence.

Does the same 2×2 photo work for every visa?

Do not assume so. Use the requirements published by the country or authority receiving the application.

Can I order Walmart passport photos online?

Walmart Photo currently describes passport photos as an in-store service. Check the linked service page for current options.
