Small boxes have an important job

Buying moving boxes at Walmart: size them by what goes inside

A giant box looks efficient until it is full of books. A useful moving-box order starts with the contents and how you will carry them, rather than a promise that one bundle is enough for a certain number of rooms.

THE USEFUL PART FIRST

Plan smaller boxes for dense items and larger boxes for bulky, lighter contents. Compare actual dimensions, strength information and the number of boxes in each pack. Add tape, labels and protective materials to the shopping list before comparing totals.

Build a box list room by room

Walk through the rooms and group what needs packing: books, clothes, dishes, awkward objects and items that can travel in existing containers. Record what needs protection or must remain accessible on the first night.

U-Haul's packing guidance separates heavy contents from bulky, lighter ones. Use that principle to choose a mix rather than filling the cart with one large size. A box's rated strength is not a target lifting weight; the packed box must still be manageable for the people moving it.

Compare measurements, not size names

Walmart's moving-box listings include different brands, sizes and pack quantities. A medium box from one brand is not necessarily the same size as another brand's medium. Check whether the dimensions describe the usable interior or the exterior.

For a specific object, measure it with the protection it will need. Do not order a tight-fitting box based only on the bare object's dimensions. For a stack of flat boxes, check whether the bundle will fit in the vehicle used to collect it.

Turn the offer into a complete packing cost

Divide the box-pack price by the number of actual boxes to compare like sizes. Then add the supplies the offer leaves out. A listing photo with tape, dividers or cushioning does not establish that those accessories are included.

Consider whether you already have sound suitcases, reusable bins or original product packaging that can do part of the job. Reusing a box calls for a condition check: damaged corners, wet cardboard and torn seams should not be treated as equivalent to a new box.

  • Confirm the selected size and complete box count.
  • Check which tape, labels, dividers or padding are included.
  • Read the exact product's assembly and strength information.
  • Order a mix based on the inventory, with a plan for any extra boxes needed.

Make the packed box easy to handle and find

Follow the box manufacturer's assembly and sealing instructions. Mark the destination room on more than one side, and give the box a short contents description. Keep a separate list for items you need to locate quickly.

A box sold for moving is not automatically suitable for every parcel-shipping service or fragile shipment. If you will mail an item, check the carrier's packaging requirements separately. For the move itself, pack important documents and essentials where you can retain access to them.

Questions that come up

How many boxes do I need for a two-bedroom home?

Room count alone cannot answer that reliably. Inventory the contents, note existing containers and choose a mix around the amount and weight you actually need to pack.

Are large boxes the cheapest way to move books?

Not necessarily. Dense contents can make a large box hard to handle. Compare appropriate smaller boxes and keep each packed load manageable.
