Select the correct Walmart store or delivery address, build a meal-based list, and review substitution choices before checkout. Walmart says accepted substitute items are charged at the substitute's price, so review changes rather than assuming the original total is fixed.
Turn meals into shared ingredients
Choose the meals you realistically expect to prepare and combine repeated ingredients into one quantity. If two recipes need onions, count the total before buying separate packs. Leave room for leftovers rather than planning a new full meal every night.
Separate necessities from flexible extras. Keep ingredients that make a planned meal possible near the top of the list; snacks and speculative bulk purchases can come later.
Buy the amount you will use
Compare unit prices using the same measure, such as ounces or count. A lower cost per ounce is useful only if you will use the larger amount. Include storage space and the product's instructions when deciding between pack sizes.

Make the important choices before checkout
Walmart allows substitution preferences, including choosing not to substitute an item. Set these deliberately for products where brand, ingredients, or size matter. A similar package may not work for a recipe or a household requirement.
Watch for substitution messages and their response deadline. Review the final receipt for replacements, unavailable items, quantities, and charges. If an item you were charged for is missing, use the order's help options rather than treating it as an ordinary out-of-stock adjustment.

Will a substituted product always cost the original price?

Is the largest pack always the best value?
