Start with rider fit and control
Measure the rider as the manufacturer's guide requests and use the chart for the particular model. Schwinn notes that recommended height ranges can vary even among bikes with similar wheel sizes. A wheel diameter alone is therefore not a complete fit assessment.
For a child, avoid treating a much larger bike as an automatic money saver. The immediate question is whether the rider can use the bike as intended now. Review the model's age, fit and use guidance together, and seek an appropriate fit check when the sizing is uncertain.
Describe the trip the bike will make
Think about the surfaces, hills, distance and carrying needs of ordinary rides. A short paved trip, leisure riding and designated off-road use ask different things of the bicycle. Compare the manufacturer's intended use instead of choosing from a photograph of suspension or tires.

Read electric-bike details as a separate checklist
If considering an electric model, check the exact battery, charger and supported operating instructions. Treat an advertised range as a conditional manufacturer claim, not a distance this guide has independently tested. Rider load, route and use should be part of your questions to the manufacturer.
