Walmart Return Policy: 90-Day Rule, Exceptions & No Receipt

Major appliances: two days is not a typo

For a delivered full-size appliance, inspect the model, damage and operation immediately. Walmart distinguishes the short return period after accepting delivery from the longer window for an appliance that remains unopened, uninstalled, undamaged and factory sealed: that exception runs to 30 days after delivery. Major appliances cannot be returned at a store.

If the refrigerator arrived with a dent, record it before installation and start the official return while the delivery record is easy to find. Do not wait for a general household-goods deadline. Marketplace appliance returns can also involve a restocking fee; obtain the item-specific instructions before arranging transport.

Opened items: a refund is not always the available outcome

Common purchases the ordinary return window does not cover

Gift cards, prepaid phone cards, SIM cards and download cards are final sale. Other listed exclusions include prescription medicines, trading cards even when unopened, alcohol and used or mounted tires. Some recalled products have their own remedy; use the recall notice rather than this general table.

No receipt: try the purchase record first

A lost paper receipt does not necessarily mean a no-receipt return. Recover the transaction in Purchase History or Walmart receipt lookup. If there is no purchase record, Walmart requires valid government-issued photo ID and verification; an accepted non-receipted refund is store credit on a Walmart gift card. Receipt-required categories do not become eligible simply because you bring ID.

Marketplace electronics and holiday dates need one extra check

Marketplace Help lists certain consumer electronics at 14 days, while the corporate policy gives many electronics 30 days. That is a real discrepancy between Walmart pages. For those orders, save the deadline shown on your purchase and raise a conflict with support before the earlier date passes.

The current standing holiday policy says most purchases from October 1 through December 31 can be returned through January 31. It is not a year-stamped 2026 announcement; seller participation and exclusions apply. Phones, major appliances, protection plans and Dyson products are among the stated exceptions. Do not apply a holiday extension to every item in a gift basket.

Start the return with the right item selected

In Walmart Purchase History, open the order details, select Start a return and choose the item, reason and available refund or replacement option. Choose one of the methods offered for that purchase and submit. A store barcode, mailed label and scheduled pickup are different routes; use the one created for this return.

Keep the receipt from the actual handoff. For multiple sellers, match each item to its own instructions before sealing a parcel. A label printed at home does not establish that the return reached a carrier.

A three-item return shows why the category comes first

Suppose one order contains a sweater, a laptop and a Marketplace phone. Do not calculate one deadline from the order total. Find the seller and fulfillment details for each item, then place the three return-by dates on separate lines. The laptop’s electronics rule and the phone’s shorter rule can matter long before the ordinary clothing deadline.

Next, decide whether you need a refund or a replacement. A cracked screen on arrival should be described as arrival damage, with a photograph and the packaging saved. A computer that works but does not run software you need is a different reason. Correctly identifying the problem makes the official options more useful; it does not guarantee a preferred outcome.

Finish by matching each returned item with a handoff record. If the sweater goes to the store and the phone goes by mail, there should be two records. When refunds arrive separately, compare them with those item lines instead of treating the missing second credit as evidence that the whole return failed.

Keep the purchase date and the delivery date distinct

For a shipped purchase, retain both dates in your record. The return period can be tied to receipt of the item, and different packages from one order may arrive on different days. Use the item’s displayed return-by date to resolve the final calendar deadline.
