Walmart Money Orders: $1 Maximum Fee, Payment and Receipt

Walmart sells money orders with a published maximum service fee of $1. Here is how to prepare the payment, avoid a payee error and keep the information needed if the money order is lost or no longer needed.

THE USEFUL PART FIRST

A Walmart money order costs its face value plus a service fee of no more than $1, according to the current official page. Walmart lists cash and debit cards as payment methods and identifies Western Union as its provider. Buy at the MoneyCenter or Customer Service desk.

Get the recipient details before paying

Ask the recipient exactly how the payee name should appear. A person, landlord and management company can require different wording even when the payment is for the same apartment. Write down the amount and any account or reference the recipient wants included.

Do not buy first and assume you can easily change the completed payee later. If the intended recipient is unclear, resolve that question before purchase. This is particularly useful for deposits, application fees or a payment made on someone else’s behalf.

Calculate the face value and service fee separately

For a $250 money order with a $1 fee, you pay $251 and the payment instrument is worth $250. The fee is not money credited to the recipient. If you owe exactly $250, buying a $249 order to keep your total spending at $250 leaves the bill $1 short.

For a larger payment, ask about the permitted amount per money order and any transaction limits. If the payment needs more than one instrument, also ask how many fees apply. Do not treat an old online claim about a $1,000 limit as a current nationwide confirmation.

At the MoneyCenter or Customer Service desk

Tell the associate that you want to buy a money order, state the amount and use the listed cash or debit payment option. Ask about any identification needed for that transaction. Check the printed value before leaving the counter and keep the payment receipt with the money-order details.

If you are using a debit card, have sufficient available funds for the amount and fee. A debit purchase at the counter is a separate issue from a credit-card cash advance. The official Walmart purchase instructions do not list a credit card as an accepted way to buy the money order.

Fill it out carefully and store the record separately

Follow the labels printed on the actual money order. Use the exact payee information you obtained and complete only the areas that belong to the purchaser. If an instruction is unclear, ask the associate or provider before signing. Do not guess where an endorsement belongs.

Keep the stub or receipt somewhere separate from the money order you will hand over or mail. A single envelope containing both can leave you without a record if it is lost. If you make a private image for your records, secure it as financial information rather than posting it publicly.

Deliver the payment with a usable reference

When paying a business, include enough of the requested account reference to let it apply the payment correctly. Keep a record of when and how you delivered it. A money order in your possession has not yet paid the bill, and handing it to the wrong recipient does not identify the intended account.

For a mailed payment, plan transit time around the actual due date. If a payment is urgent, ask the recipient about an accepted route and posting time before buying the instrument. A low service fee may be less useful than a different accepted method if the deadline is tomorrow.

If it is lost, stolen or no longer needed

Use the provider and reference on the money order or receipt to ask about its current status and available claim or refund process. Explain whether the recipient name is already filled in and whether you believe it has been cashed. Keep any request number and the date you contacted support.

Do not assume the retail counter can immediately reverse every money order after purchase. A refund or trace can involve the issuing provider and documentation. If you made an error, ask for the proper correction process rather than crossing out the payee or altering the amount yourself.

Money orders, transfers and check cashing are not the same

A money order is a payment instrument you buy and deliver. A money transfer uses the selected provider’s transfer route to make funds available to a recipient. Check cashing converts an eligible check into proceeds. The three can be available at one counter while having different fees and requirements.

Before making the trip, decide which result you need: a document for a landlord, cash pickup for a family member or cash from a paycheck. That distinction makes it easier to compare total cost and timing. Our MoneyCenter overview compares the services without treating one provider’s fee as the price of every transaction.

Questions that come up

Can I pay with a credit card?

Walmart’s current money-order instructions list cash and debit cards. Use one of those or ask the counter about your specific situation before relying on another method.

Does a $1 fee mean the money order itself is worth $1?

No. The service fee is additional to the face value you choose.

Should I keep the stub after giving someone the order?

Yes. Keep the identifying record until the payment is resolved, so you can ask the provider about the correct instrument if a problem occurs.
